Description
This rug draws inspiration from the legendary weaving traditions of the Caucasus Mountains, a region spanning modern-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and Dagestan.
Rugs from this area — often known as Kazak rugs — were traditionally woven by tribal communities in remote highland villages. These were not commercial products, but deeply personal creations:
-
woven for family homes
-
used in ceremonies and dowries
-
designed as protective talismans
-
carrying meanings through motifs rather than words
The bold medallions seen here are classic Caucasian symbols of strength, guardianship, and harmony, while the repeated geometric forms represent continuity and the passing of tradition across generations.
These pieces became highly prized along the Silk Road and later collected across Europe for their unmistakable graphic power and authenticity.
